Toyota Confirms 2028 Launch of Land Cruiser FJ in India

Toyota Confirms the Land Cruiser FJ SUV with rugged off road capablity

Toyota has officially confirmed that the legendary Land Cruiser FJ will make its way to India in 2028. The iconic SUV, known for its rugged off-road capability and timeless design, is expected to attract enthusiasts looking for a blend of adventure and luxury.

Built on the Fortuner Platform but No Diesel Offering

The Land Cruiser FJ rides on Toyota’s proven IMV ladder-frame chassis, shared with the Fortuner, Innova Crysta, and Hilux. However, unlike these siblings, the FJ will not offer a diesel engine. Instead, Indian buyers can expect a 2.7-litre petrol unit producing approximately 163 HP and 246 Nm of torque, alongside hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options. The version showcased at the show came with a six-speed automatic gearbox and a part-time four-wheel-drive system.

Toyota’s choice to skip diesel is driven by increasingly stringent emission regulations, which are difficult to meet with heavier body-on-frame SUVs. The introduction of hybrid and PHEV options underscores Toyota’s commitment to cleaner, more efficient off-road-capable powertrains.

Toyota’s Rugged Styling and Functional Interior

At 4,575 mm in length, the FJ is slightly shorter than the Fortuner but maintains a commanding presence on the road. Its design emphasizes durability, featuring bold body panels, rugged cladding, and a side-hinged tailgate with a spare wheel. With 215 mm of ground clearance and aggressive approach and departure angles, the SUV is clearly built for off-road adventures, drawing comparisons to the Mahindra Scorpio N in terms of capability.

Inside, the FJ balances rugged practicality with modern technology. The cabin uses durable materials designed to withstand tough conditions and comes equipped with a 12.5-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. Physical buttons and knobs remain, making it easier to operate during off-road driving. The India-spec model will likely feature a two-row, five-seat layout. While functional, the rear seats may not offer premium touches like a sunroof or dedicated rear AC vents.

Pricing and Production Outlook of Toyota FJ

Toyota plans to start production of the Land Cruiser FJ (code: 900D) in August 2028, targeting an annual output of 89,000 units. Of these, around 40,000 are expected to be exported to markets such as the Middle East. With significant localisation efforts, the starting price in India could hover around Rs. 30 lakh (ex-showroom), with hybrid and PHEV variants priced higher.

The Land Cruiser FJ is set to become a new gateway into Toyota’s legendary Land Cruiser family, combining rugged off-road capability, modern hybrid technology, and a distinctive, adventure-ready personality that will appeal to enthusiasts and explorers alike.
